About Eastern Railway
Eastern Railway (ER) is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways headquartered at Fairlie Place, Kolkata. It was established in 1952 and plays a key role in managing the railway operations in the eastern states of India like West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand. ER consists of four divisions – Howrah, Sealdah, Malda, and Asansol – and major workshops like Liluah, Kanchrapara, and Jamalpur.
The Eastern Railway has always been a strong pillar of the Indian economy and employment sector. The Apprenticeship program is one of its key initiatives to develop skilled manpower in the railway ecosystem.

Eastern Railway has announced a total of 3115 apprentice slots across various units, divisions, and trades:
Howrah Division – 659 Slots
Major trades: Fitter, Welder (G&E), Mech. (MV), Carpenter, Electrician, Wireman, Machinist, Painter, Lineman (Gen), etc.
Liluah Workshop – 612 Slots
Trades: Fitter, Turner, Welder, Machinist, Electrician, Wireman, R&AC, Painter, etc.
Sealdah Division – 440 Slots
Trades: Fitter, Welder, Wireman, Ref & AC, Electrician, Painter, Blacksmith, Mason, Electric Mechanic.
Kanchrapara Workshop – 187 Slots
Trades: Fitter, Welder, Electrician, Machinist, Wireman, Painter, Carpenter.
Malda Division – 138 Slots
Trades: Electrician, Fitter, R&AC, Welder, Painter, Carpenter, Mech. Diesel.
Asansol Division – 412 Slots
Trades: Fitter, Welder, Turner, Electrician, Mech. Diesel.
Jamalpur Workshop – 667 Slots

Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
- Must have passed 10th class or equivalent under 10+2 system with minimum 50% marks in aggregate.
- Possess National Trade Certificate (NTC) in notified trade issued by NCVT / SCVT.
- Equivalent trades under CTS scheme (like “Wood Work Technician” for Carpenter) are also accepted.
Age Limit (as on 13.09.2025)
- Minimum Age: 15 years
- Maximum Age: 24 years
Age Relaxation:
- SC/ST: 5 years
- OBC-NCL: 3 years
- PwBD: 10 years
- Ex-servicemen: Additional 10 years (subject to rules)
Only age documented in Matriculation/Birth Certificate will be accepted.
Medical Fitness
Candidates must be physically and medically fit as per the Apprenticeship Act. A certificate signed by a Government Gazetted Doctor is required.
- Minimum height: 137 cm
- Minimum weight: 25.4 kg
- Good vision, hearing, and general physical health required
- Refer official notification for trade-wise disability eligibility
Application Fee
- General/OBC/EWS: Rs. 100/-
- SC/ST/PwBD/Women: No Fee
- Mode of Payment: Online via Debit/Credit Card or Net Banking
Salary & Benefits
- Stipend will be paid monthly as per rules of the Apprentices Act, 1961.
- Certificate of completion provided by NCVT/SCVT
- Preference in future Railway Group D recruitment for trained apprentices
Apprenticeship does not guarantee permanent employment.
Selection Process
- Selection is strictly merit-based.
- No exam or interview.
- Final Merit List will be based on average percentage marks of:
- 10th class (with at least 50% aggregate), and
- ITI trade certificate (NCVT/SCVT)
- In case of tie:
- Older candidate preferred
- If DOB same, earlier 10th pass preferred
Example Calculation:
If a candidate scores 78% in 10th and 86% in ITI:
Merit = (78 + 86) / 2 = 82%
Only 1 unit & 1 trade per candidate will be finally allotted based on merit.
Exam Pattern & Syllabus
- No written test or syllabus
- Final merit list = (10th % + ITI %) / 2
